30Fish.com - Day 29

Yay, day 29, the end is now well and truly in sight! As you know I didn’t go North for the weekend and ended up back in Auckland yesterday afternoon. Was good to surprise the family as they didn’t know I was heading back, there was another reason for coming back to Auckland… The other reason was 4.7 meters long and was at the Johnson Outdoors factory in Silverdale, yes my custom green Ocean Kayak Prowler Ultra 4.7 was ready and waiting for me to pick up! So quick stop at home to drop off my Ocean Kayak Prowler Elite 4.5 and back to Silverdale to pick it up.Click here to read more

30Fish.com - Day 27

Woke up this morning to an alarm that sounded several times louder than normal, what’s going on, lifted my head off the pillow and it felt twice as heavy, hmm, this ain’t good, yep thick head, runny nose, body aching, yep I’ve gone and got a dose of the man flu!Click here to read more

30Fish.com - Day 26

Been raining on and off here in Whangarei today, looked like it was going to be a wet one tonight that’s for sure, but by the time I got home it turned out to be ok, a bit of a breeze was hanging around, so where tonight..? For the eagle eyed among you, you would have noticed something strange in the photos of Day 22 – something that was there, then wasn’t there… If you didn’t at the time, go back and have a look, answer later… Tonight I was going to head back up the Ngunguru estuary again.Click here to read more

30Fish.com - Day 25

The wind has been up all day again, the swell forecast was big so where to go, I didn’t fancy being tossed around again, so wanted to stay out of the open ocean if possible, could do the Ngunguru estuary but to be honest I didn’t want to spoil my favorite spot by over fishing it, so where, the Whangarei harbour sounds good… The harbour it is, but now where do I go, ah back to Urquharts Bay, that way I can venture into the channel and hopefully stay protected from the NE wind. Got there about 6:30pm, in the water and on the edge of the channel by 7:00pm.Click here to read more

30Fish.com - Day 24

After such good conditions last night, and a nice clear day all day today, I planned on heading out of Matapouri, and paddling around and fishing the heads between Matapouri and Tutukaka.Click here to read more

30Fish.com - Day 23

After a weekend of paddling, the body was against a big paddle, but hey, it’s only 2 km and a bit to Goat Island from Whangaumu Bay, what’s another 2 km… I’m sure it’ll be worth it, well I hope so at least! This evening the weather was next to perfect, so I decided to head over to Goat Island, a few people had told me to check it out, well they can’t all be wrong can they… For more and photos go to 30Fish.com - Day 23

Something different today! After discovering a gem of a fishing spot on day 14, and having my family (including my nine year old son Josh) with me this weekend I decided it was time to put Josh in the back of my kayak and take him fishing. So I took the Tagit bag out of the back of my Ocean Kayak Prowler Elite, threw a second softbait rod and reel in the kayak, put a life jacket on Josh, sat him in the back and paddled off for a fish up the Ngunguru estuary, to my “magic” spot.Click here to read more

30Fish.com - Day 21

It had been windy all day in Whangarei, averaging 40 km/h and gusting up to 55 km/h, and it hadn’t dropped by fishing time so where to go in the kayak or do I flag it and go rock fishing… Kayak fishing was the plan so I headed over to Whangaumu thinking I might be able to get over to Goat Island but one look from the beach told the story… So what now? I’ll try over the hill at Pacific Bay, now that was better. Kayak off the car and paddle into the harbour, nice and flat.Click here to read more

30Fish.com - Day 20

It’s been a pretty miserable day here in Whangarei today, it’s been raining for most of the day so it was going to be a wet one for sure. The good thing was that the wind was pretty absent today so I thought it would be a good time to head out in front of the Ngunguru spit where a couple of people had advised me to head. I launched from one of the many boat ramps in Ngunguru and it had actually stopped raining, or so I thought, there was a heavy mist sitting over all the hill tops. The tide was on it’s way in but there was no trouble paddling against the current.Click here to read more

30Fish.com - Day 19

After coming to the conclusion that Whangaumu isn’t holding any Snapper, well at least for me in the center or northern side, I decided to try back in the Whangarei harbour where at least I picked up several fish on Sunday… I thought I’d try further up the harbour this time though. I launched from Onerahi out the back of the airport, great launching and parking facilities.Click here to read more
