The Equaliser a fantastic event!

With 121 hardy anglers signed up for the January 23rd event, the weather did its best to blow them and the fish away. Several boats however showed that there are a few fish around, with Marligator, Robyn Time and Warrior amongst others all enjoying a fruitful mornings fishing. Many others however were luckless on the day, but hey “that’s fishing!’. Not surprisingly, these boats featured when the $20,000 prize pool was distributed.
The concept behind the comp was to level the playing field by limiting fishing time to exclude night / change of light opportunities, and it appeared to work well in many cases. This was shown by Russell Wood fishing from a 3m inflatable taking out the Kahawai section with his 3.025kg fish caught just outside the Tga Harbour entrance. Regan Little also took his chances, he landed a small (but ultimately big enough!) Trevally along Matakana to take out the Trevally section from his 14ft tinny!
Two very nice Snapper were taken by Junior angler Caitlyn Luyton on Marligator to win the Open section with a fish weighing 4.19kg, and then the Junior section with her second fish which weighed 3.355kg – well done Caitlyn!
Thanks to the many sponsors and supporters of the event – together we have raised around $7000 for Ronald McDonald House in Auckland. Look out for the event again next year – we’ll be back, and we’ll be looking for more entrants and sponsors to improve on our first up effort.
