Fishing with poppers and stick baits has received a huge amount of press over the last couple of years, with the majority of it focusing on kingfish. The kingfish surface-casting experience is incredibly visual (along with the fact that kingfish are an amazing sportfish in their own right). The sportfishing industry is if nothing else masterful at reinventing itself, and so it’s little wonder that the somewhat-neglected lure fishing sector is being revisited. The resurgence of hard-body lure fishing in NZ is hardly surprising though, as the technique dovetails beautifully with our softbaiting and topwater pursuits, and the impressive advances in lure design have been showcased at tackle shows world wide.
