  • Feb 12 - Ranfurly Madness

The two premier kingfish destinations in New Zealand (in the world, for that matter) would have to be the Three Kings Islands and Ranfurly Banks. I had always favoured the Three Kings over the Ranfurly for its sheer ruggedness and the spectacular islands in the area - but now, after having been on my first serious venture to the Ranfurly Banks, I may have to change my views. For anglers living in the Bay of Plenty access to Ranfurly is so much easier than the long drive to the Far North for the Three Kings and - most importantly - the fishing is truly spectacular.

  • Feb 12 Raurimu - Where the BIG REDS play!

Situated 9 nautical miles north-west of Whakatane and 5.1 miles west of Whale Island lie a small group of islands called the Rurimus (known locally as the Rau’s).
They’re small but significant - a popular playground for those who love diving, kayaking and of course fishing; especially snapper fishing, because at the right times of the year the shallow reefs that surround the islands produce not just big reds but some of the biggest seen NZ-wide.

  • Feb 12 - Snapper - Upsize that order!

“Would you like to upsize your order”?
There’s something extra special about heading out and upsizing your fish-order all day long, all starting with just a miniature hook with a little tinsel on it. You can head out with any level of fishing intensity in mind, from something entirely leisurely yet entertaining to do with the kids anchored calmly in a sheltered bay, through to hard core mates on a serious no holds barred fishin’ mission to infinity and beyond!

  • Feb 12 - Top 10 Tips on DIY Fishing

There’s no doubt our pioneering ancestors knew the true meaning of D.I.Y. With no Mitre 10 or Supercheap Auto within easy sailing distance, they quickly became experts at solving problems using whatever they had on hand – often just a length of number eight wire.
Grown from our pioneering heritage to become part of our popular local culture, imagination, innovation, and finding solutions without necessarily using lots of money are characteristics Kiwis have become renowned for around the world.

  • Fisherchick at White Island

By Clare Crockford White Island: The kingfish-hunting mecca. But why would a seemingly-sensible girl think she could take on a monster kingfish hunt from a kayak - and a sea kayak at that - when she’d never even caught a 10lb snapper? Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time…

  • A Tale from Tahua

    Story by Dianne Reihana

For as long as I can remember, even as a kid, I have had a fascination with the sea. My favourite programme while growing up was that doco Our World. It had that fella with the trademark voice - David Attenborough. I was mainly intrigued with it because I was so curious about the world around me, and I liked the fact that on the telly I could watch fish underwater without having to physically get wet! Even though I didn’t have much opportunity to experience fishing growing up, I knew that one day I would probably get a chance to throw a few baits around - from a wharf, a beach, or maybe from a boat. It wasn’t until I met my partner (now of 15 years) Matt that I would get to do some real fishing.

  • Getting the Cabin Girl Hooked

    Story by Johanna Keyzer
Ever since the old boy hooked a marlin accidentally while out trolling for skippies (with a 6/0 Penn - and landed it with his 73-year-old mate) he has quietly beavered away at achieving a repeat performance ... part of which beavering involved seven years of ear-chewing to finally get the go-ahead on a 6.1m Surtees Barcrusher. I know – they were my ears!
There had been a lot of planning, reading multitudes of mags and perusing the internet (Fishnet has a lot to answer for!) The plan also included up-grading from the good old Penn reels that we used for hapuka to two beautiful shiny gold Shimano Tiagra 50 reels, complete with lovely custom-built fully-rollered game rods from Rodworks.

  • Dec 12 The stealth auto feed longline

Anyone who ever put one out will tell you that at times, if it hadn’t been for the ‘extra fisherman’ left to do its work for a couple of hours while the real fishermen wasted bait, told lies and threw biodegradable rocks at the mutton birds, the fish bin would’ve stayed empty and the fillet knives stayed clean. On perfect days things go well, but when you add a stiff breeze, a difficult chop, an unexpected boat movement, or an operator error you've suddenly got too many things to do and not enough hands to do them with. Introducing a new way!

  • Dec 12 - Filletting Kingfish step-by-step

Big kingfish are tremendous sport fish and they are easily accessible to the wider public, which places them high on the agenda for many anglers. If you are lucky enough to land one and decide to take it home for a feed, here are a few steps which will help you ensure its eating qualities will be kept at a premium. I have also included a step-by-step process on how to easily break down one of these animals to make sure you get the full value from it.
